Reviewing

The time has come to review my favourite Spring purchases. These are the bits that I've found the most versatile over the last few months. As we haven't really had a long spell of really good weather so I shall have to review high summer later.....assuming that we are in for some hot weather at some point! It would seem that Topshop and Zara are where I have found most of the best bits so far. I'll start from the top and work my way down. First up being outerwear, my favourite Spring coat has been this Topshop duster/trench. Great with jeans and a tee when a top layer has been needed, also really loved it over my Pull & Bear dress when I wore it a couple of weeks back here.

Hands down this jacket from Zara has been my favourite. This is going to be one of those jackets that will be so wearable all year around! Now sold out online.

Zara jacket £59.99

Next up....love these shirts from Topshop. I've worn these on numerous occasions and look forward getting a lot more wear out of them. The shape of them is just so perfect for me, if they came in other colours I would snapping up more!

Neat fit chambray white shirt £29

Onto the bottom halves.....Zara totally have these covered this season. I was so desperate to find a pair of chino's last year. This year I managed to find 2 pairs of trews that have now well and truly ticked the chino box!

These Zara jeans are the best pair of jeans I've bought in a long time! These are also no where to be seen on the website now.

Zara jeans

My favourite skirt...I loved it with opaques and boots when I bought it back in February, but boy it is really coming into it's own now we can go bare legged.....as you will see a bit further down!

Jack wills skirt

Jack Wills, sold out

This Topshop dress has been an absolute winner during the tricky transitional weather, loved wearing it with my Stan's, looks great with sandals now the temps are rising!

Topshop dress, current

Last but not least, the footwear. These Vans skate shoes have been brilliant! I love them so much that I am currently contemplating buying them in leather as I have had so much wear out of them, the leather ones would be great for rainy days, I am a tad precious about getting the canvas ones dirty!

Style - Minimal + Classic: Vans classic slip-on | & Other Stories

It's been good to do this little end of Spring review as it's made me ponder a bit on my purchases and it strikes me that they are all classic items that will stand the test of time and come out year after year. That certainly tells me something about how I shall be looking to shop in the future, especially now I aim to buy less. The almighty clothing cull is still going on, I've removed another 15 or so items from my wardrobe this past week. I been reading another great destuffocating book (thank for the recommendation Sue) called The life changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo which has really helped me let go of somethings which I have been dithering about. It's really helping me to shop my wardrobe a lot better too and it's keeping me out of the shops, my purse is breathing a sigh of relief, I can tell you!

Onto what I have been wearing. I started off the beginning of last week in York on a little trip with my mum. Here's a quick changing room selfie of what I travelled in.

Whilst I was in York, I did have the pleasure of meeting up with my lovely blogging chum Susie So So and it was have been rude not too have taken advantage of her amazing photography skills here! ;0)

Anyone else do an end of season review? Have you worked out your best bits yet? I would love to hear which have been your favourite pieces of the Spring season!

As always I love reading and responding to your comments.

Be back soon!

  1. Fantastic buys Michelle that as you say are going to be making an appearance for many years to come. You're doing so well with the wardrobe culling too you'll have nothing left soon lol ;-)
Looking as gorgeous as ever in your outfit posts.

    1. Thanks Jane! The wardrobe review along with the cull will hopefully help me to buy better in the future! Believe me the wardrobe is still bulging but as I sit here typing I can think of another couple of things that I need to remove.....it's still a work in progress! xx

  2. Great post Michelle! I'm on a mission to simplify my wardrobe, I wear a uniform to work and work full time so I don't need so many clothes and what I do buy I put a lot of thought into how hard it's going to work in my wardrobe. I love your style as I keep saying! Great photos from York xx

    1. Sue, life is so much easier when you have a uniform for work! I would love that, I reckon I would appreciate what is in my wardrobe a lot more then! I am starting to put a lot more thought into what I'm buying, I really need to be 100% about it before I hand over my plastic! What I need to do is try things on when I see them, which I don't always then I end up going home and I can't stop thinking about them. Then when I go back I've imagined them to be so much better than they actually are. I could nip this habit in the bud if only I tried things on straight away then I wouldn't be so disappointed when I go back for them and they weren't how I remembered!I think the wardrobe cull has had a real impact on my style this season, I definitely feel happier with it! xx

  3. Great idea to do an end of season purchase review... think I have gone a little off piste the past couple of weeks so a review may serve to pull me back in line! Loving the topshop trench x

    1. Ooh yes, I would definitely do a little review! I think once the sales start that is when I tend to go a little off piste but I am staying away from the sales as if I really needed/wanted it that much I would have bought it at full price or hopefully bagged it a with a code earlier in the season! ;0) xx

  4. Have been loving reading about your culls and it inspired me to do my own - very cathartic! I'm now trying to think more carefully about clothes I buy and ensuring they truly fit with my real life (and not my fantasy one!) x

    1. It's a great exercise isn't it Heidi! And your statement about dressing for reality and not our fantasy lifestyles is so true for me too! I am guilty as charged as far as that's concerned as I love *going out* clothes but in reality I rarely go out so I am learning how to buy things that will take me from daywear to evening wear.....I think I'm getting there slowly but surely! xx

  6. What Heidi said above is so true. If you read a lot of blogs, you find yourself buying a lot of things which are not necessarily your own style or what will fit in with your lifestyle. I've learnt to accept over the last couple of years that I have a very simple style which works best for me and I really have stopped giving in to every trend going. And like you, my purse breathes another day. I've read the Marie Kondo book and though I haven't done the cull yet, it has at least made me reassess what I buy. Maybe I was already doing it but at least it has reinforced everything for me. But I may take a few things she says with a pinch of salt where it suits me.

And can I say, it was really lovely to catch up with you in York and you're a born natural in front of the camera. It's hard to take a bad pic of you.

    1. Heidi has completely hit the nail on the head hasn't she Sue! I am so much happier now I have made my style so much simpler instead of chasing every trend, I've worked out what's best for me.....I'm always looking to improve it just a little bit more though and I still think I could get away with having a lot less in my wardrobe. I had already done an almighty cull before I read the Marie Kondo book, now I just keep going into the wardrobe and refining it and I want to keep doing that so that I am left with what I really love and will actually wear!
As for my picture......I hate having my photo taken but you have absolutely bought out the best in me you put me at ease so that must surely be the secret to getting a good shot! It was so lovely to see, hope to catch up with you again soon! xx

Fab post & outfits as always Michelle. I've been culling my wardrobe too & thinking carefully about any buys. I've been trying to hunt down khaki chinos all season so I may give in to the Zara ones. Can I ask about sizing in Zara trs as I've never bought any trs from there? Thanks J x

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you J! The chinos I got in the size small....I am usually a size 10 so they come up alright size-size. The army trew were a whole 'nother story though, they come up huge! I got the size 8 but I could have easily got away with a 6!
I'm still removing stuff from my wardrobe...... took out a jacket, dress, shirt, jeans and some trainers! The more I do the easier it gets! :0) xx

  10. Great post & outfits Michelle, after I had my second child I had a major wardrobe cull and I have slowing been building it back up, with investment pieces and simple classics, that I am sure (and hope) will last the test of time. Admittedly I fall of the wagon every now and again and have that impulse purchase, but thinking ahead to winter I will be only buying just a few items possibly 5 all season. Those Zara jeans are fab aren't they, my favourite jeans at present..... thank you for the tip on them.

    1. Thanks Annmarie! What you have described with your wardrobe cull is exactly my aim too! I hope to buy hardly anything this Winter, just a few investment sweaters and there is bound to be a bit of footwear too! You sound like you already have a plan so I will be watching with interest as to what you get! xx

  13. I lve all of your outfits, Michelle. You always look amazing! I'm still trying to do a wardrobe cull too and I've been buying very little too after depending a lot earlier in the year. I have a huge bag for charity which I really must get rid of! Lynne xx

    1. Thanks Lynne, you are too kind! The more you cull the easier it seems to become more ruthless! It's definitely stopped from buying as much, I think a lot more about what I'm buying too! xx

  15. What strikes me immediately about your best buys is that you've almost got yourself a little capsule wardrobe going on. Each piece is perfectly wearable with all the others, and there's nothing that doesn't easily fit in. I'm sure if I did a similar review there'd just be a list of random impulse-buys with nothing in common at all!!

Coincidentally, I dragged an old chambray shirt out today - I felt a bit mumsy in it, but I tried it buttoned right up to the top and I was rather pleased with the result! You are inspiring me to look at things I haven't worn for ages, and ditch some of the stuff that's just cluttering up my wardrobe because I can't bring myself to part with it. It's quite liberating, isn't it?!

Loving all your outfits, and I agree that Sue is a fab photographer! York is such a beautiful place, and how nice to get a bit of time away, just you and your mum. Hope you both returned well rested xx

  16. You really have got your wardrobe with sorted Michelle, everything is just so wearable but still looking really cool at the same time! I do think a wardrobe cull or a critical eye cast over it, is really necessary every season, as it's so easy just to buy into another trend and wear nothing you already own! I'm all for the less is more school of dressing! Love you picture by Sue too...She's right it would be hard not to make you look gorgeous !!
    Helen xx
