The grey t-shirt debacle

So! I have been in search of the style staple that is the grey T.
I ordered this one from J Crew.

And so I waited. I had failed to grasp that it was actually being shipped all the way from the states! It came like this.

A lot of fancy packaging for a t-shirt that cost £20.50 inc p&p from the USA! But a lovely touch none the less....although pretty wasteful no?! Anyway here it is on

Honest opinions please! The fit is quite good, I ordered a small which they say is equivalent to a UK size 8-10. It's long which is a plus point but I do think the V is a bit too deep....almost bordering on obscene on me although it's doesn't look too bad in the photo, it's low and I feel exposed! I don't have any cleveage to speak of, I'm not sure whether that's a good or bad thing! I'm laughing at myself as my pose is making me look like I have a spare tyre round the middle....I promise it's not so bad in the flesh! The colour is a bit lighter than I wanted, this one screams high Summer with white skinny's, for me it's not for right now. I'm not a 100% sold on it. What say you?

So typical that whilst waiting for the J Crew t-shirt to arrive I saw this grey T when whizzing through Topshop the other day.....like buses 2 come along at once! This ones priced at £16. It's quite roomy, you may want to size down. I tried on an 8 and there was plenty of fabric in it. Love the slightly darker shade of grey, you could wear this one now so definitely a keeper!

Here's it is on. Love the slouchier shape and I think you'll agree the V is much more flattering.

This next one is also from Topshop. It's very sheer and would need a vest underneath but the shape was good on this one too. So now I'm very tempted by this one.

So what do you think ladies? Should I keep the J Crew one? I'm in a quandry, do I need 2? I looked for a good grey T last Spring/Summer with no success.....is that a sign I should keep both? Should I send back the J Crew and go for the lighter Topshop one? Decisions, decisions!! Has anyone else spotted a good one that I may have missed?

Moving swiftly on to what I've been wearing of late!

As you can see I am getting plenty of wear out of the brogues! This is the various stages of the same outfit

  2. Go with your gut instinct. Think you've almost made your decision by the sounds of it anyway. I love both the Top Shop ones, particularly the flattering v and fold over cap sleeve. But I don't not love the J Crew - just not as much!!! Gerroff the fence Donna - sorry I'm no help :-o

    1. No worries about sitting on the fence Donna.... all comments much appreciated!! I shouldn't be such a ditherer!! I just don't want to end up with a muffin top and I think as they J Crew is slim fit....I may end up with that.....yep that's me definately talking myself out of it! x

  3. Oh god, I think I told you I got bought the pink jcrew for xmas, I haven't even tried it on yet. I have ample cleavage but don't like to show it! On you, I think it looks fine, keep for summer. I'm not keen on the Topshop one if I'm honest and it is something to do with the neckline. Time to try American Apparel me thinks x

    1. Great shout about American Apparel, there is one of those close by so that's somewhere definately worth a shot for the grey T! Thanking you kindly for that tip off Sharron x

  4. I personally like the neckline of the J Crew one Michelle, but if you're not comfortable in it don't keep it as it will probably be one of those items you put off wearing. Go with your gut instinct & if your prefer the Topshop one stick with that! Jane xx

    1. Thank you Jane....voice of reason! I think you've hit the nail on the head.......I think I will always chose the Topshop one over the J Crew so that's sound advice indeed! x

  5. Hard decision! I like the J Crew one (gorgeous light shade of grey!) although I think you`re right with the neckline, it`s more of a high summer T (would probably look great together with some neon). I`ve seen a similar one at Boden: grey, v-neckline that does not look too low (but also seems to be a quite sheer fabric).

    1. Evi...thank you as I hadn't thought of checking Boden either! May I say that you always do Boden justice....you have some fab stuff from them and you manage to find pieces that suit you so perfectly x

  6. I'm not keen on the J Crew one to be honest. I much prefer the Topshop one. Trust your instincts. Lynne x

  7. I love my J Crew one for the quality, I got the medium my fit is slightly more loose but unfortunately I've got the ample cleavage to fill it!!! I must admit the V is deep and even I have to be carefu ll. Stick with your gut..... Plus point for the J Crew is that it doesn't bobble due to it being 100% cotton! I got the American Apparel ones, love the fit but they do bobble after a bit. X

    1. I have to admit I couldn't fault J Crew from the quality! I think the Topshop one will bobble as it's polyester and cotton and the fabric is described as burnout...whatever that means but I am prepared to take the risk as I prefer the slouchier fit! Thank you for the top tips though x

  8. I like the colour of the J Crew one, but I agree, I think the V neck is a little too low! The Topshop one looks fab, much better shape on you. As the other ladies have said, go with what your comfortable with...your gut feeling is usually right! x

    1. I am gonna go with the gut Sian....you are right! Comfort is paramount and I don't want to be fiddling and worrying about bending over either! Sound comment....much appreciated! x

  9. I'm going to be controversial M, I adore the J Crew T, I'm not as keen on the Topshop one, sorry! I think it looks AMAZING on you (J Crew one). If you're not comfortable though it's never gonna work for you. How about a vest/cami underneath in winter?? LOVE your outfit in pic 3. Love Vikki xx

    1. Ahh bless you Vik! Not controversial at all! Love your honesty! I shall try it with a vest underneath.....just hope that doesn't make it cling to the muffin top anymore ;0) xx

  10. I love love the j crew on you too, it looks lovely and luxurious fabric. I would completely keep it if not to wear now to wear in the summer, I bet you will wear it non stop would look fab with boyf jeans and your stan smiths or nb's it with boyfs jean, navy blazer and your brogues (I am sure there is a Pinterest photo of that somewhere) all the tees look look fab but I say it's a keeper! 1. I know the exact pic you refer to and that is the look I was going for! Need to have a little trying on sesh to see if I can make it work under a blazer....that little combo that you've conjured up does make me picture J Crew! Sounds perfect! x

  11. The material on the J Crew one is quite thin isn't it? But will have a really good drape and the look is good. It's cut just that fraction too low which makes it awkward when you bend down and everyone sees down to your belly button (been there, done that). The Topshop one is more throw it on and the neckline being higher makes it less of a worry. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions. I was just thinking that H&M must have an almost identical one to the J Crew one in that kind of soft modal finish - I think I have one (must dig it out). But I'm totally on the fence and love both on you. In which case, I'd go out and buy a third which embodies both. Does that make any sense? I didn't think so :o( Sorry.

  12. Heaven forbid I should bend over and expose my belly rolls to the general public Sue! Lol! The J Crew is going back and I'm going back to Topshop to get the other lighter one as I do want a lighter as well as the darker one! There decision made! xx

  13. I don't think I can add much more to this - you've had a very comprehensive response already! I would say that unless the JCrew one works with a vest underneath, I'd send it back and keep looking. Boden have a grey marl v-neck with that off-bias fabric and they also have a great boatneck...a neckline that I think suits us 'girls who were last in the norks queue' much better :) xx

  14. I love a boat neck, so I am definately going to check out the Boden one! I don't think I will be happy in the J Crew.....I have a white Zara linen T that is cut low and it does my head in! Off to the drawing board for a 2nd choice of grey T! x

  15. I love the colour of the J Crew one & agree that the quality looks amazing but if you feel uncomfy in it then it defeats the purpose! You do look great in it btw! I have a white Benetton T thats a tad low & I love it but I'm always too conscious of flashing too much flesh in it! Ax
